I’m waiting for the moment when someone in Ottawa finally scratches their head and goes, “Hmm? There seems to be something wrong with our education system?”

  • Why do kids stress about exams? If they learned, not temporarily memorize, the topics taught in class, shouldn’t the exams be a breeze?
  • Why is 70% the provincial standard? They’re teaching us 100% of the stuff, but only expect us to understand and know 70% of it?
  • Why are such abstract subjects, and opinionated assignments, being marked by just one teacher? If a class of students is having an 80% average, and another class a 60%, perhaps it is not necessarily the students’ fault. Perhaps it is the way the teacher marks. I could understand if the marks are based on grammar or spelling. They’re unchanging and it is either you’re right or you’re wrong. However, for subjects such as art, or creative stories written in English class, why are the marks of student’s being held in the hands of a teacher’s whimsy?
  • Why are there academic and applied classes? Admit it. It is well known that what is taught in applied courses are meant to be significantly easier than academic courses. Are some students less capable than others? Plus, the student’s courses are what determines their future. Perhaps in a student’s final year they decide they want to become a doctor. Good luck trying to get into a life sciences program with all applied courses.
  • Why are students put into groups based on their ages? Just take a look around in a classroom and observe the maturity levels of some students. Sheesh, look at their averages if you want! If a student is not ready to learn something, more importantly a lack of desire to, why teach it to them? What is the priority here? To give students a good education, or to get them out of school as fast as possible following a set schedule?
  • Standardized testing, oh boy. I’m sorry, but the only category I see that is worth anything in life on a test is thinking/inquiry. From what I’ve seen, it is what many students struggle the most on. The rest of the test can be done with good memorization skills. The time limit as well. I wonder how many students leave a test going, “If only I had fifteen more minutes!” Let them hand in the test when they’re confident they’re finished. It is a test of how much they understand, not how fast they can write.
  • The lack of desire to learn and what we’re being taught. I’d like to point out math and science classes. We shouldn’t be memorizing a bunch of facts and figures. Heck, why are we punching in a bunch of numbers in our calculators. When are we EVER going to use this stuff? Give us realistic situations to apply them. Why do I want to know why a lady is buying 300 watermelons and rotating them down a hill with a slope of_______? Impress the students, teach them to use chemistry to make Coca Cola instead of extracting copper. In classes like Civics, why do I want to know where the members of parliament sit? I want to know who to vote for in the next election. What are the party platforms? Oh wait, I’m not going to learn that?

Rant temporarily done. I have a feeling I’ll be complaining a lot about this in the future. I’m interested in hearing others opinions about education from wherever they’re from as well.
